Every time someone joins this church, they make five promises: prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. Over five weeks we take them one at a time, through the big stories of Genesis and Exodus.
Week three is prayers. Joseph's address changes twice in this chapter, from Potiphar's house to an Egyptian jail, and Genesis says the same sentence about him both times: the Lord was with Joseph. The sentence never adjusts for the address.
Most of us assume our closeness to God rises and falls with how life is going. Joseph never says a single recorded prayer in this chapter, and the connection holds anyway. The good news is that God's presence was never waiting on Joseph noticing it, and it isn't waiting on ours either.
