Genesis 12:1-9 (CEB)
Live It Out Loud

Every time someone joins this church, they make five promises: prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. Over five weeks we take them one at a time, through the big stories of Genesis and Exodus.

Week two is witness. God tells Abram to leave his land, his family, and his father's household for a land God has not yet shown him, and Abram goes at seventy-five with a promise and no map. When he arrives he builds an altar in the open, where anyone walking past can see whose he is.

What stops most of us isn't God. It's the thought of being that person, the one with the tract who corners you at work. Abram never argued with anybody. He just quit keeping God to himself, and that is a much lower bar than we have been assuming.
