Walk through the second floor this week and you can see the project taking shape. New supply and return diffusers are in place. Ceiling tiles that have been stored for months are going back up. The building is starting to feel like itself again, with new infrastructure quietly working behind every grid line.
What's Happening
The sanctuary air handling unit (AHU-2) is being replaced this week. P1 broke the old unit down on Monday and is setting the new one in place from the exterior scaffolding just outside the sanctuary. Final connections happen Wednesday and Thursday of next week. Sunday worship in the sanctuary is not affected.
The mechanical room continues to come together. The new chiller, boilers, chill water pumps, and hot water pumps are all set. Crews are insulating the piping that runs from the mechanical room out to the chiller. Once those connections are tied in and pressurized, the system is one step closer to running.
Vertical stack fan coil units for the west side of the building arrive Wednesday. Once they are set, only two reordered classroom units remain. Insulation crews of five and six people continue to wrap piping and ductwork. Control wiring and thermostats are nearly complete throughout the building.
On the second floor, ceiling tile and grid reinstall continues across multiple rooms. Workers are also detailing supply ductwork serving the chapel area, with the larger air handling unit (AHU-3) and its companion (AHU-4) reinstall continuing this week and next.
What to Expect
You may notice more fan noise around the building this week. New equipment is running in factory-set startup mode while controls come online. Once systems reach normal occupied mode, it will be much quieter.
Office area work moves into high gear during Memorial Day week. P1 will work Tuesday through Friday (May 26 to 29) instead of the usual Monday through Thursday schedule, completing rough-in sheet metal and piping across both the church offices and the STEPMC offices. Members visiting the office that week may find limited access; please call the church number to coordinate.
Looking Ahead
May 26 to 29: Memorial Day week schedule (Tuesday through Friday); office area rough-in across all offices.
Early June: Final two reordered fan coil units arrive and get installed.
End of June: Major completion target for the project.
Mid-July: Final closeout and project documentation.
By the Numbers
As of May 18, 113 households have committed to the Tomorrow First campaign, with $1,845,113 pledged toward our $1.75 million goal. To date, $931,758.24 has been received, or 53 percent of the goal. Every gift moves this work forward and equips our church for the ministry God is calling us into.
How to Give
Give online at mcphersonfirst.org/give (select "Tomorrow First"), by mail to 1200 E Kansas Ave, McPherson, KS 67460, or place gifts in the worship offering plate marked "Tomorrow First."
What started in the basement and on the roof is now reaching every floor and every room. We are reminded each week that God's work is patient and persistent, much like the crews quietly moving pipe, duct, and tile back into place. Thank you for the prayers, the gifts, and the patience that keep this project moving forward.
