For six Sundays we follow God's people through one question: whom will you serve? Week three turns the question around: what would you ask God for?
In 1 Kings 3, God appears to the young King Solomon in a dream at Gibeon and says, "Ask whatever you wish, and I'll give it to you." Solomon doesn't ask for long life, wealth, or victory over his enemies. He asks for "a discerning mind" to govern God's people, and God gives him that and more besides.
On All Saints Sunday we read the names of saints who have died and share the Lord's table. The life and teaching of Jesus show us what God is like: a God who gives more than anyone asks. This week's next step is everyday generosity: decide ahead of time to say yes when somebody asks, with cash, a meal or a gas card.
