In one of his final conversations with the disciples, Jesus calls himself the true vine and his Father the vineyard keeper. John 15 invites the disciples (and us) to remain in him, promising that the branch which stays connected to the source bears fruit it could never produce alone. The image draws on Israel's long story of being God's vine and points forward to a new kind of belonging.
