The new heating and cooling system is starting to do what we have prayed and given toward for months: it is cooling our building. This week the project moved from heavy installation into startup, and the finish line is finally in view.
What's Happening
Chill water is now flowing to the Serve Center area, so that space should feel noticeably cooler. The final connection on the air handler that serves Hess Hall finished this week, sending cool air directly into the hall instead of down the hallway. All of the major equipment is now on site, so the work ahead is installation, insulation, system startup, and testing. New fan coil units and piping are in place across the building, and crews are returning ceiling grid and tile to many second floor rooms.
What to Expect
The office area is still the warmest part of the building and is next in line as insulation wraps up. A crane will return the week of June 29 to run the boiler vent stacks up through the building and out the roof. This visit is far less disruptive than the April crane pick: it needs no core drilling, no new construction, and nothing moved out of the way. Because the water heater shares that space, hot water will be off for a couple of days mid-week during that work. Finish work also begins that week, including ceiling tile, acoustic panels in Hess Hall, flooring on the first floor, and a few sheetrock repairs.
Looking Ahead
The week of June 22 brings the final fan coil units and the last of the piping and duct insulation. The week of June 29 includes the boiler vent stack crane work, the start of finish construction, and system startup and testing. Owner training is tentatively set for the week of July 13. Most of the major work should wrap by the end of June, with final closeout and inspections in mid-July.
By the Numbers
113 households have committed $1,845,113 toward the campaign. To date we have received $961,339.75, which is 55% of our $1.75 million goal.
